General Web FAQ

I tried to comment on a story, but your website requires I sign in for comments using access to another account I use like my Facebook account. Why did you make that change?
A trend in the industry is to require users who want to comment to verify their identity through sites such as Facebook to remove anonymous individuals or fictitious names. We believe this will make our comments section more valuable to our readers and help improve the conversation around news.

Why can’t I find a specific news story online?
We do not guarantee that all stories that are in the print publication will be run online. Currently, the only way to assure that you can catch all the news stories in our publication from a given day is to pick up a copy of the publication at any of our many newsracks or browse the e-Edition. Contact our circulation department for information on newsrack locations at 327-1652.

When searching North Hawaii News online archives, please note that our online archives only go back as far as February 2007. Should you be searching for a specific story older than that date, please contact the Public Library.

North Hawaii News’ circulation department only houses print archives up to one year out. If you are searching for a print copy older than one year, please contact the Public Library.

How do I find a story that was published in an earlier edition of your paper?
To search for past articles, click the “Archive” link the top navigation bar.

e-Edition FAQ

What is the e-Edition?
The e-Edition is the complete content of your local paper in an easy-to-read digital format. The e-Edition is laid out just like the print edition of the paper, including all photographs, illustrations, and advertisements. It is a PDF version of the paper displayed in a Flash module.

What are the major differences between the HTML and electronic versions of the newspaper?
The HTML paper presents content in a format much like a conventional web site, while the e-Edition preserves the look and feel of the printed paper. The HTML paper may appeal more to people accustomed to reading online news material, where the e-Edition may appeal more to people accustomed to the traditional layout of a printed newspaper. While the HTML paper is convenient, it lacks some of the features only available in either our print or e-Edition, including:

  • Entire content of articles, columns, crosswords, etc.
  • Full access to all print advertisments, many of which offer special discounts and deals.

Can I read the e-Edition offline, such as during a train or plane ride?
The e-Edition can be read offline only if you download it to your computer. The drawback to doing this is that the PDF documents will take up space on your machine. To take advantage of the e-Edition’s full usability, we recommend reading it with a live internet connection which is at times not allowed on certain modes of transportation. To learn how to download a PDF of the e-Edition, please see the question “How do I save article text and/or pictures?” below.

Can I read e-Edition on a mobile device like iPad or an e-reader like Kindle?
At this time, we do not support optimum functionality of e-Edition on mobile devices and e-readers. e-Edition does serve to iPhone and iPad devices as a JPEG image, which limits how closely you can zoom in. On other mobile devices, e-Edition serves as text. Some e-readers like Kindle and Kobo support PDF files, as well as iPads, and newer-generation iPhones and iPods. The e-Edition can be downloaded as a PDF file to your computer and then transferred to these devices. To learn how to download a PDF of the e-Edition, please see the question “How do I save article text and/or pictures?” below. Please reference your mobile device or e-reader’s instruction manual to learn how to transfer PDF files to your device.

How do I get access to the e-Edition?
North Hawaii News’ e-Edition is available FREE.

What are the system requirements?
e-Edition requires an internet connection. Your system setup should have a Single Core CPU 2.0 GHz, or Dual Core CPU 1.5 GHz or higher and it should have 512 MB or more RAM. e-Edition will work on any operating system with a supported browser and Flash Player 10.0 or later.

How do I go directly to a specific page?
Underneath the copy of the newspaper, there is a tool bar. In the left-hand corner of your e-Edition tool bar, you will find three separate icons. Hovering your mouse over these icons will show you there is a Table of Contents, Bookmarks and Thumbnails. If you prefer to navigate the paper by a Table of Contents, click the Table of Contents icon. If you prefer to navigate by small visual indicators of the pages, click the Thumbnails icon. You will then be able to click on the page you desire to view.

How can I read the article text in the full page display of the paper?
The full page display, even at largest size, is only meant as a preview for navigation purposes. To read the text, use the zoom settings to zoom in on the page to the article, ad or other content you wish to read.

How do I save article text and/or pictures?
Click the “Download” icon in the bottom tool bar. You will download the full PDF of the e-Edition to your desktop. Be aware that such content is subject to copyright law and can only be used with permission. It is unlawful, for example, to copy an article or picture from the e-Edition and print it in a newsletter or post it on a blog.

I can’t read the text in some ads.
If the ads used a small font when they were created they maybe unreadable. However you may be able to zoom in on the text and make it out (see the reference graphic under “How can I read the article text in the full page display of the paper?” above). If the text was made as a graphic, which may happen in ads, the text may remain unreadable, even when zoomed in.

Can I use my dial-up service to read the e-Edition? Is the speed useable?
Yes, however you may notice that the download time is considerably longer than that of a high speed internet connection. We recommend using a dial-up connection speed of at least 56.6k.

Why can’t I see the e-Edition?
Please make sure you have the latest Adobe Flash Player installed. e-Edition requires Flash Player 10.0 or higher. If you require assistance with installing the Flash Player, please contact Adobe’s Help Center.

I’m having problems printing articles or images from the e-Edition.
The only way to print articles or images from the e-Edition is to first download the PDF version by clicking the “Download” icon in the bottom tool bar (see “How can I read the article text in the full page display of the paper?” above). e-Edition will be saved to your machine as a PDF file, thus it is viewed through Adobe Acrobat Reader. Because of the original size of the PDF files, which are the same size as the full-scale print edition (11.5 inches by 22.5 inches), when you are attempting to print a page, you are limited to the print settings Adobe Acrobat Reader provides. Most personal printers print on 8.5 x 11 inch paper, and a full newspaper page would be difficult or impossible to read when scaled down to fit on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.

For more information on printing large-scale PDFs, please see your Adobe Acrobat Reader’s “Help” menu, or visit Adobe’s Help Center.

Note that some solutions may require you to save a copy of the PDF document to your desktop in order to view the full Reader menu which may be inaccessible if being viewed in your web browser.

Why is the e-Edition running so slow?
Your e-Edition is what is commonly referred to as “rich content.” To provide you with this content, we need to download a lot more data to your browser than many other web pages would require.

Loading time will depend greatly on the speed of your Internet connection and the amount of other traffic on the Internet routers between our servers and you.

Know that there are many factors that could be contributing to slow loading times:

  • You are running an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Make sure you have installed the latest version of the plug-in.
  • Your ISP’s servers could be experiencing a brief period of slowdowns.
  • Our host server could be experiencing a brief period of slowdowns.
