Silk Painting Workshop

Time: 26 Aug 2011 – 13:00

Location: Showcase Gallery

Address: 79-7407 Mamalahoa Hwy Kainaliu

Learn the tradition of painting and textile dyeing, in a contemporary style.

A silk painting class will be held on Friday, August 26th, from 1-4pm, in the Showcase Gallery in Kainaliu.  This is an opportunity to express yourself with color and to have fun and create in this freestyle class that focuses on abstraction verses realism.

Participants will learn to prepare and stretch fabric on a frame, mix dyes, and paint their own 8” x 53” scarf using three colors of their choice, which will create many more colors on the silk.  Students will also learn to use the wax tjanting tool on a China silk sampler piece to form resist lines, then paint their design.

The class is taught by Patti Pease Johnson, a silk artist selling in the islands for over a decade, and silk and pastel teacher at various venues around the island.   As with all Johnson’s classes, she does not demonstrate the project first, as she wants each artist to bring their own creativity to the piece.   Various samples are shown on how to obtain certain results but each person has their own style and that’s what she aims to help bring out of each student. “I love the fact some people create rather abstractively, others more impressionistic, and another may tend toward more realism,” says Patti. “Plus, it all depends on that particular moment in time of what’s going on inside us that shows up outside of us through visual arts.”

The cost is $70, and all materials are supplied.  For more information or to register, please contact Showcase Gallery, 322-3203, before August 20th.
