2012 PRIMARY ELECTION:

• Now through Aug. 4: Voters may request absentee mail ballots for primary or general

• June 30: Hawaii County clerk mails yellow cards to voters telling what districts they’re in for Council, State House and Senate, and where they vote

• July 30 – August 9: Primary absentee walk-in voting – anyone may go to any one of these three locations; Photo ID required. Locations:

* Hilo: Aupuni Center Conference Room – 101 Pauahi St. – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

* Kona: West Hawaii Civic Center Community Room (Building G) – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

WAIMEA MIDDLE SCHOOL-COMMUNITY INVITED TO ‘GET THE SCOOP’ ON THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR: From 5 to 6:30 p.m., July 19 in the Waimea School cafeteria. Free. The school’s newly appointed Local Advisory Panel (LAP), chaired by Dr. Kamana Beamer, and new principal, Matt Horne, invite all school families and community friends for a welcome-briefing to celebrate student and faculty achievements for the past year, and to preview briefly the year ahead including such highlights as working together on Accreditation, and also a school-wide Hawaiian navigation theme as students integrate core curriculum studies into learning about and contributing to final preparation for and the start of the Hokule’a voyaging canoe’s round-the-world sail. BACKYARD AND WORM COMPOSTING WORKSHOP: July 21 in two locations: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Waimea Country School and 2 at 4 p.m. Paauilo School in the library. An interactive and informative two-part workshop on basic home composting. The first half will focus on backyard composting. The second will discuss worm composting. A voucher for a free Earth Machine home composter will be given to each family participating. Workshop materials fee: $10 per adult. Keiki free. Note: backyard composting doesn’t have to be back-breaking, sweaty work. Learn how to do it the easy way and reap the benefit of improved soil. Composting with worms is an easy way to save money and turn kitchen scraps into garden “gold” or free fishing bait. Highlights include a “how to” demonstration on setting up your very own worm condo. We will also explore basic worm management, harvesting methods and more. Worms and some commercial units will be available. NORTH HAWAII O-BON DANCES: In Buddhist tradition, families welcome back the spirits of departed loved ones during the summer months with services and festive dances called o-bon. The community is invited. HAWAIIAN PRINTMAKER PRESENTS WAIMEA ARTIST GUILD WORKSHOP: From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,July 23 to 27. WAG workshop next to Mama’s House. Hawaiian printmaker Harinani Orme will present a five-day hands-on workshop; class limited to 6 to 8 students, depending on the overall level of experience within the group. Cost is $300 including materials. Harinani earned her BFA degree at the University of Hawaii, Manoa and MFA at Pratt Institute, New York. FREE PREMIERE OF TRAUMATIC NEW FILM, ‘PERILS AND PEARLS IN PARADISE’ AT TUTU’S HOUSE: From 4:30 to 6 p.m., Aug. 3. This new film “Perils and Pearls in Paradise – Hawaii Island Alcohol Stories and Facts” is an original documentary by Holly Algood of North Kohala, spotlighting 29 Hawaii Island residents whose lives were in some way dramatically touched by alcohol – from head of the trauma center at North Hawaii Community Hospital, various people in recovery, youth talking about how they’ve stayed away from it, and parents of an adopted child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. CREATIVE WRITING COURSE BY PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR IN HAWI: From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Aug. 8,15, 22 and 29. Susanna Moore, born and raised in Hawaii and now residing in New York City, has published nine books of fiction and non-fiction and teaches Creative Writing at Princeton University. Among her books is “In the Cut,” which was made into a movie scripted by Ms. Moore and starring Meg Ryan. She is visiting family friends on the Big Island for the summer was asked her to teach such a course. Program for all levels of writers. Each student will submit two short stories or parts of a memoir for review by the class. Registration first come; class limited to 12 people and will be held in a private home in Hawi. Cost is $100.
