10th ANNUAL BIG ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL AT THE FAIRMONT: May 21 through 25. A free grand opening is open to the public on May 21 at The Shops at Mauna Lai. During the festival, tickets are available for family films, film screenings, workshops, outdoor nightly double features, celebrity receptions and a final night “Best of the Fest” event. New this year, “Taste of the Movies,” is a dine-around dinner featuring 10 of the island’s best chefs with movie-themed dishes. KAMUELA HONGWANJI GARAGE SALE: 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 23, Hongwanji Hall next to Waimea’s Historic Cherry Blossom Park. The public sale will include household items, plants, farm vegetables, comics, clothes, oriental collectables, books and more.
FREE MONTHLY ‘WALK AND TALK’: 9 to 9:45 a.m., Saturday, May 23 and the fourth Saturday of the month. Meet Vivienne Aronowitz, dietitian and certified diabetes educator, for this walk at Waimea Nature Park behind Canada-France headquarters on Mamalahoa Hwy. Come prepared for rain or shine. KAWEHI IN CONCERT AT KAHILU THEATRE: 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 27. The Hawaiian independent artist is known for her live shows as a “one-woman band” via beatboxing, guitar, midi keyboard and Ableton Live. Known for her opinionated songwriting, centering her music messages around social issues and injustices, Kawehi ’s videos and songs have been featured in Huffington Post, Esquire, Spin, Elle, Maxim and People. FREE COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) TRAINING: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturdays, May 30, June 6, 13 and 20, Waimea School Cafeteria. Will provide knowledge and skills to prepare for and properly respond to an emergency impacting you, your family and community. Topics covered include emergency preparedness, fire, emergency medical, light search and rescue, the CERT organization structure, disaster psychology and terrorism.
